Crypto Scam Alert: She Promised Financial Freedom but Delivered Devastation
Today someone in the CryptoScams Reddit sub contacted me because he wanted to share his story about how he was scammed 6 months ago so people could learn from his experience and become victims. So here it goes.
He was approached 6 months ago by a lady called Anna through WhatsApp. They started to flirt, she was attractive, and he was handsome so they were attracted to each other right away. While chatting with her, she commented that she knew a way for him to achieve financial freedom and she introduced him to the website https://coincapeap.com. This website is no longer active but when it was operative it was a platform that users would use to trade cryptocurrencies and they promised a huge return (around 120% profit from your investment). He did a few checks and didn’t notice anything weird, and because the return was so high, he decided to invest.
To invest, he had to buy USDT from a legit exchange website and then deposit the cryptocurrency in a MetaMask wallet that was created on his behalf and that was connected to the website. Once the funds were transferred, then he could trade and start making money out of his investment. What he didn’t know is that because he didn’t control the MetaMask wallet, he was not able to withdraw the funds ever again. While he was putting money in the platform, the scammers recommended he take a loan to fund future trades and make more money in the end (leaving him with a huge debt).
“While he was putting money in the platform, the scammers recommended he take a loan to fund future trades and make more money in the end (leaving him with a huge debt)”
After a while, he decided to withdraw some of the funds, and he was able to withdraw a small amount. However, when he tried to withdraw the rest, the platform started to come up with excuses as to why he couldn’t withdraw the money (tax, money laundering, etc). When he couldn’t withdraw the money, that is when he realized that he had been scammed and was not going to see his money ever again.
When he told me his story today, he mentioned that he is doing better, economically and mentally, with the help of his family. I know that what I’m going to say next is easier said than done but we need to remember that we can regain the money that we lost, and we can learn from this experience, so it doesn’t happen to us ever again.
Also, if we can share the story so other people don’t fall into this kind of scam, in my opinion, it makes us feel better.
Lessons learned from his experience:
- If they push/force you to take loans and invest money that you don’t have, is likely a scam.
- Don’t ever let them create a crypto wallet on your behalf. Not your keys, not your coins.
- High returns on your investment, are likely a scam.
